Types of German language certificates

“Why take language certificates?” This is a question I have heard many times from friends and students. The answer is not simple, because there are different types of German language certificates. In this article I will tell you about these types and the advantages of having specific certificates.

Why take language certificates?

It is worthwhile to work towards passing a language certificate primarily for two reasons. First, by registering for the exam, you will prepare for it. You will be highly motivated to spend a lot of time studying in a short period of time – especially since most institutions require candidates to pay fees before taking the exam. So for many people, the mere fact of signing up for the exam will cause them to study more and more intensively, which can bring surprising results.

Second, testing knowledge results in reinforcement. Research shows that the active recall of information that takes place during testing makes it very powerful in consolidating one’s knowledge. What’s more, tests help identify areas that need additional exploration, so you’ll know what you still need to work on. Therefore, regular practice of language tests is an effective strategy to support the process of learning and acquiring a new language.

I found this out for myself when I was preparing to pass the Goethe-Zertifikat. Since I wanted to go on an internship in Germany, my goal suddenly became very clear. I had to write the C1 level exam with a super score. I then set about studying very intensively. I prepared a whole list of topics I had to learn and solved weekly mock tests. As a result, I managed to go from B2 to C1 level in a few months.

Language certificates are irrefutable proof of language proficiency. They are often required for work or education abroad. There are many different language fluency certificates you can earn, depending on what your goal is. Each tests your knowledge based on 4 skills: reading with understanding, listening comprehension, oral communication and written communication.

Goethe-Zertifikat

Goethe-Zertifikat is a series of language certificates offered by the Goethe Institute, a well-known German cultural institution. Certificates are available at various levels, from A1 to C2. The Goethe-Institut offers exam preparation materials, including official textbooks, mock tests and other resources. Certificates issued by the Goethe-Institut attesting to passing any of the Goethe-Zertifikat exams from A1 to C2 are valid indefinitely.

However, many institutions and employers require a certificate that is no more than two years old. After this time, the candidate can decide to take the exam again to renew their certificate. It is worth mentioning that Goethe-Zertifikat certificates are recognized and valued worldwide, which makes earning one a valuable achievement.

TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache)

TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is a German language exam designed primarily for those who plan to pursue higher education at German-speaking universities. The exam is designed to assess whether a candidate has sufficient language skills to successfully study at a university. It is often required as proof of German language proficiency at a level that makes it possible to understand lectures, read specialized literature and communicate effectively at university.

TestDaF assesses at three levels, labeled TDN 3, TDN 4 and TDN 5. These levels correspond to language proficiency levels B2, C1 and C2. Many study programs require a specific level of DaF scores. To sign up for the exam, browse the official TestDaF website and check the availability of dates and exam locations in your country. If you want to see if you’re ready, you can test your level on the TestDaF Institute’s website (Fit für den TestDaF). There, you will receive a score and an evaluation of your current skills within ten minutes. The TestDaF certificate has a temporary unlimited validity.

TELC (The European Language Certificates)

TELC exams are comprehensive and tailored to meet the different needs of candidates. There are general exams, professional exams and exams for specific age groups. Exams and certificates are available at all CEFR-compliant levels (i.e. A1 to C2).

  • Candidates taking exams at A2, A2–B1, B1 and B2 levels can take the “school” exam, which is designed for students between the ages of 12 and 16.
  • Candidates at the A2–B2, B1, B1–B2, B2 and B2–C1 levels can take the business exam, which is designed for those who want to obtain proof of their language competence in a variety of business situations.
  • At the B1 level, candidates can also take a test with a hotel-restaurant profile, designed for those who want to confirm their language competence in this type of environment.
  • A technical exam (at B2 level) is also available, designed for advanced candidates in technical professions. Registration for the exam can be done by email.

DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer)

The DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) exam is mainly aimed at people who intend to apply for German citizenship. The DTZ exam assesses skills at two levels: B1 and B2.

The exam tasks cover topics related to everyday life, German society, law, and the communication skills necessary to function in society. The exam is usually organized by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Germany (BAMF).

DSD (Deutsches Sprachdiplom)

The DSD, or Deutsches Sprachdiplom, is a German language certificate issued by the Central Consultation for Foreign Schools (ZfA) aimed mainly at foreign students. It covers two levels: DSD I and DSD II.

The DSD I exam is graded at the B1 level. After passing the exam at this level, you still have to attend Studienkolleg (an institution that prepares you to study at German universities). The DSD II exam is graded at the B2/C1 level and confirms that the candidate has advanced language skills, exempting him or her from the requirement to attend remedial courses. DSD exams are administered in elementary schools and high schools in the graduating class. The exam is taken without paying any fee, as long as it is taken in a group. On the other hand, you have to pay for passing individually.
